Story Summary

"If you cannot give one fistful of grain… you must pay a thousand gold coins!" In Vijayanagara, a learned woman named Vidyullata put up a board offering a thousand gold coins to anyone who could out-think her. Scholar after scholar failed. Then a humble firewood seller, with just two words — 'a fistful' — led her all the way to the royal court. The seller was none other than Tenali Ramakrishna in disguise. A story about why cleverness needs humility.

The Firewood Seller's Bargain — One Fistful of Grain
Morning

One morning a firewood seller passed by her house, calling out his wares.

"Firewood, madam… good firewood!"
"How much for all your firewood?"
"I want no money, madam. Just give me one fistful of grain — and all this firewood is yours."
"Such a cheap bargain? Someone like you hasn't the wit to bargain with me."

Saying this proudly, she went inside and brought out a handful of grain.

"Here! This is what you asked for, isn't it?"
04

What Did 'One Fistful of Grain' Really Mean?
Vidyullata's House

But the seller did not take the grain.

"Madam… I asked for just one fistful of grain. Do you understand?"

Vidyullata grew angry.

"Do you think I don't even know what a fistful of grain is? I am the cleverest woman in this whole region!"

The seller smiled.

"What I asked for is a single grain big enough to fill my hand. Give me just that one."

Vidyullata was stunned. No such grain existed anywhere. In the end, the two of them went to the royal court.

The Debate in Court — Who Cheated Whom?
The Royal Court

In the court, Vidyullata argued first.

"My lord! This man has cheated me. He set this condition knowing full well that no grain big enough to fill a hand exists anywhere!"
"My lord, I hid nothing. I stated my condition beforehand. It was she who agreed without thinking."
"My lord! He said 'a fistful of grain'. Ordinarily that means a fistful of grain! Now he twists his words and says a single seed that fills a hand!"
"When striking a bargain, it is the buyer's duty to ask the meaning of every word. And you were the one who claimed your intelligence was greater than everyone's!"
06

The King's Verdict — and the Seller Was Tenali Ramakrishna!
The Royal Court

The King listened to both. The condition had been stated beforehand — and it was Vidyullata who accepted it without fully understanding it.

"Vidyullata! The challenge was yours. And it was you who accepted the condition. So take down your board, and give this man the thousand gold coins."

Vidyullata stood in silence.

"Who is this seller who defeated me so cleverly?"

He removed his disguise — it was Tenali Ramakrishna!

He taught her that cleverness is not for showing off — that a wise person must also be humble.

Moral 🌾

Intelligence makes a person great… but pride defeats that very intelligence.

Life Lesson

In any agreement, ask the meaning of every word. It is those who think 'I already know everything' who get caught by the smallest words.
