విజయనగర సామ్రాజ్యంలో ఒకరోజు రాజభవనంలో ప్రత్యేక విందు ఏర్పాటు చేశారు. ఆ రోజు రాజుగారి తోటలో పండిన అరుదైన వంకాయలతో రాజ వంటవాడు ప్రత్యేక కూర తయారుచేశాడు.
One day in the Vijayanagara empire, a special feast was arranged at the royal palace. The royal chef prepared a unique curry from rare brinjals grown in the king's own garden.
వంట వాసన మొత్తం సభలో వ్యాపించింది. ఆ వాసనకే మంత్రుల నోళ్ళలో నీళ్లు వచ్చాయి.
The aroma spread through the entire court. Ministers' mouths were watering just from the smell.
తెనాలి కూడా ఒక ముద్ద తిన్నాడు. అతని కళ్ళు పెద్దవయ్యాయి.
Tenali too had a bite. His eyes went wide.

రాత్రికి తెనాలి ఇంటికి వచ్చాడు. భార్య నీళ్ళు ఇస్తూ అడిగింది.
Tenali returned home that night. His wife offered him water and asked:

తెనాలి నెమ్మదిగా రాజభవనం తోటలోకి వెళ్లాడు. గస్తీ భటులు కాగడాలు పట్టుకుని తిరుగుతున్నారు.
Tenali quietly slipped into the royal garden. Guards were patrolling with torches.
తెనాలి చెట్టు వెనుక దాక్కున్నాడు. అప్పుడే…
Tenali hid behind a tree. And then…
ఒక పిల్లి "మ్యావ్!" అని అరచింది.

Tenali leapt into the air in fright.

ఇంటికి వచ్చాక భార్య ఆనందంతో వంకాయలు తీసుకుంది.
Back home, his wife joyfully took the brinjals.
కూర తయారవుతోంది. నూనె చిటపట… మసాలా వాసన… ఆవిరి…
The curry was cooking. Oil sizzling… aroma of spices… steam rising…
కుటుంబం మొత్తం కూర తిన్నారు. వాళ్ల కొడుకు కూడా చిన్న ముద్ద తీసుకున్నాడు. కూర వాసన నోటికి వెళ్లగానే… కొడుకు కళ్ళు పెద్దవయ్యాయి. ఆనందం నిండిన ముఖం.
The whole family ate. Their son also took a small bite. The moment the aroma hit his mouth… his eyes went wide with joy.

The King's Anger — Suspicion Falls on Tenali
రాజభవనం. తోటమాలి పరుగెత్తుకుంటూ వచ్చాడు.
The royal palace. The gardener came running.
రాజు అనుమానంగా చూశాడు. కానీ ఆధారం లేదు.
The king looked suspicious. But there was no proof.

Knowing soldiers were coming… that night Tenali woke his sleeping son. He took a bowl full of water.
బాలుడు తిరిగి నిద్రకు పోయాడు. కానీ తెనాలి నిశ్చితం చేసుకున్నాడు — ఈ ఘటన బాలుని స్మృతిలో నిలిచిపోయింది.
The boy went back to sleep. But Tenali was certain — this moment was now lodged firmly in his son's memory.

మరుసటి రోజు భటులు వచ్చారు.
The next day, the soldiers arrived.
భటులు ఒకరినొకరు చూసుకున్నారు. కానీ రాజభవనానికి సూచన ఏదీ లేదు.
The soldiers looked at each other. But there was no link to the palace yet.
భటులు ఆశ్చర్యపోయారు. ఎందుకంటే నిన్న సరిగా వర్షం పడలేదు. ఆ సాయంత్రం మేఘాలు కూడా లేవు. చంద్రుడు పూర్ణుడు.
The soldiers were confused. Because it had not rained the previous day. There were no clouds that evening. The moon was full.
భటులు గందరగోళంలో పడ్డారు.
The soldiers fell into complete confusion.
తుది సభ — రాజు నవ్వాడు!
The Final Court — The King Laughed!
భటులు రాజుకి మొత్తం విషయం చెప్పారు. సభలో అందరూ అయోమయంలో ఉన్నారు. ఎటువంటి ప్రమాణం లేదు. ఎటువంటి సాక్ష్యం లేదు.
The soldiers reported everything to the king. The court was baffled. No evidence. No proof.
రాజు తెనాలి వైపు చూశాడు. తెనాలి అమాయకంగా నిలబడ్డాడు. సంపూర్ణ నిర్పాపత్యం.
The king looked at Tenali. Tenali stood there completely innocent-faced. Total, utter innocence.
తర్వాత రాజు పెద్దగా నవ్వాడు. ఆ నవ్వు సభ అంతటా పెరిగింది.
Then the king burst out laughing. And the laughter spread through the entire court.
సభ మొత్తం నవ్వింది. తెనాలి నమ్రంగా నిలబడ్డాడు.
The whole court laughed. Tenali stood humbly.
సభ వెలిసిపోయింది నవ్వుల్లో.
The court dissolved into laughter.

At night he poured water on his sleeping son. The son cried "it is raining!" in his sleep. Next day when soldiers asked, the son genuinely answered "we ate curry when it was raining" — since it never rained, the soldiers were completely stumped!
తెనాలిపై నిరూపించదగిన సాక్ష్యం లేదు. కొడుకు చెప్పిన "వర్షం పడుతున్నప్పుడు" అనే మాటతో అయోమయం ఏర్పడింది. రాజు తెనాలి తెలివికి మురిసిపోయాడు — అందుకే నవ్వేశాడు.
There was no provable evidence against Tenali. The son's statement "when it was raining" created confusion. The king was actually charmed by Tenali's cleverness — which is why he laughed instead of punishing.
