పాలు తాగని పిల్లి

విజయనగర రాజ్యంలో ఎలుకల బెడద రోజురోజుకూ పెరుగుతోంది. గోదాముల్లోని ధాన్యం, రైతుల పంటలు, వ్యాపారుల సరుకులు — ఎలుకల వల్ల తీవ్ర నష్టం జరుగుతోంది. ఈ విషయం తెలుసుకున్న శ్రీకృష్ణదేవరాయలు వెంటనే సభను ఏర్పాటు చేశారు.

The rat problem in Vijayanagara was growing worse by the day. Grain in the godowns, farmers' crops, merchants' goods — all suffering heavy losses to rats. On learning this, King Krishnadevaraya immediately called a special court session.

రాజసభ మొత్తం రాజు నిర్ణయాన్ని ప్రశంసించింది. కానీ మహాకవి తెనాలి రామకృష్ణ మాత్రం నిశ్శబ్దంగా ఉన్నాడు.

The entire court praised the King's decision. But the poet-minister Tenali Ramakrishna alone stayed silent.

తెనాలి కొద్దిసేపు ఆలోచిస్తూ కూర్చున్నాడు. తర్వాత శారదను పిలిచాడు.

Tenali sat thinking quietly for a while. Then he called out to his wife, Sarada.

శారద సంతోషంగా వంటింటికి వెళ్లి పాలు తీసుకొచ్చింది. తెనాలి ఆ పాలను చూసి అన్నాడు.

Sarada happily went to the kitchen and brought the milk. Tenali looked at it and spoke.

శారద ఆశ్చర్యంగా చూసింది. కొద్దిసేపటికి బాగా వేడిగా ఉన్న పాలను తీసుకొచ్చింది. తెనాలి ఆ పాలను పిల్లి ముందు పెట్టాడు.

Sarada looked puzzled but did as asked, returning soon with piping hot milk. Tenali placed it in front of the cat.

పిల్లి ఆకలితో పాలు తాగడానికి వచ్చింది... నాలుక కాల్చుకుని... భయంతో పరుగెత్తింది.

Hungry, the cat came to drink — burned its tongue — and bolted away in fear.

తెనాలి మాత్రం నిశ్శబ్దంగా ఉన్నాడు. కొన్ని రోజుల తర్వాత శారద పిల్లికి అన్నం, పెరుగు పెడుతుంటే అడిగింది.

Tenali said nothing more. A few days later, as Sarada was feeding the cat rice and curd instead, she asked again.

అని చెప్పి తన పనిలో పడిపోయాడు. శారదకు ఏమీ అర్థం కాలేదు.

And with that, he returned to his work — leaving Sarada completely puzzled.

కొన్ని నెలలు గడిచాయి. అయినా రాజుగారు ఆశించినంతగా ఎలుకల బెడద తగ్గలేదు. ఇది చూసిన శ్రీకృష్ణదేవరాయలు ఆశ్చర్యపోయారు.

Months passed. Yet the rat menace hadn't reduced anywhere near what the King had expected. Krishnadevaraya was baffled.

మరుసటి రోజు రాజసభ ప్రాంగణం పిల్లులతో నిండిపోయింది. అన్నీ లావుగా, మెరిసిపోతూ, బాగా పెరిగి కనిపిస్తున్నాయి. వాటి మధ్యలో తెనాలి పిల్లి మాత్రం సన్నగా, చురుకుగా కనిపించింది.

The next morning, the court grounds filled with cats — all plump, glossy, well-fed. Amid them, Tenali's cat alone stood out — lean and alert.

రాజసభలో నవ్వులు వినిపించాయి. రాజు ఆశ్చర్యపోయాడు.

Laughter rippled through the court. The King was astonished.

వెంటనే పరీక్షించాలని ఆజ్ఞాపించాడు. ఒక సేవకుడు వెండి పాత్రలో తాజా పాలను తీసుకొచ్చాడు. ఆ పాత్రను తెనాలి పిల్లి ముందు పెట్టగానే అది ఒక్కసారిగా భయంతో వెనక్కి దూకి పరుగెత్తుకుంటూ దూరంగా వెళ్లిపోయింది.

He ordered it tested at once. A servant brought fresh milk in a silver bowl. The moment it was set before Tenali's cat, it leapt back in terror and bolted far away.

రాజసభ మొత్తం ఆశ్చర్యంతో ఒకరినొకరు చూసుకుంది. శ్రీకృష్ణదేవరాయలు తెనాలి వైపు తిరిగి —

The entire court exchanged astonished glances. Krishnadevaraya turned to Tenali.

తెనాలి వినయంగా నమస్కరించి చెప్పడం ప్రారంభించాడు.

Tenali bowed respectfully and began to explain.

రాజసభలో మళ్లీ గుసగుసలు మొదలయ్యాయి. తెనాలి కొనసాగించాడు.

Murmurs rippled through the court again. Tenali continued.

రాజసభ మొత్తం నిశ్శబ్దంగా మారింది.

The entire court fell silent.

కొద్దిసేపు మౌనంగా ఆలోచించిన శ్రీకృష్ణదేవరాయలు చిరునవ్వుతో అన్నారు.

After a thoughtful silence, Krishnadevaraya smiled.

వెంటనే రాజు తన ఆజ్ఞలో మార్పులు చేయించాడు. పేద కుటుంబాలకు పాల సహాయం అందేలా ప్రత్యేక ఏర్పాట్లు చేశాడు. అలాగే ఎలుకల సమస్యను తగ్గించేందుకు గోదాముల భద్రతను మరింత బలోపేతం చేయాలని ఆదేశించాడు.

The King amended his order at once — arranging special milk support for poor families, and directing the royal godowns to be secured more effectively to curb the rat problem itself.
