When the court showers the king with flattery, calling his job the hardest in the world, Tenali Ramakrishna boldly disagrees — a mother's job, he says, is even tougher. To prove it, he has a young boy make an impossible request that leaves even the king speechless. What starts as comedy ends as one of the most heartfelt lessons in the series.
The Debate in Court
A peaceful morning in the Vijayanagara empire. The court was in session, ministers and scholars deep in debate. That day's topic — "What is the toughest job in the world?"
Some ministers turned to the king and began to flatter him.
The king smiled with pride.
Everyone nodded, continuing their praise. Tenali alone sat in silence. The king turned to look at him.
Tenali's Opinion
The whole court fell silent. Every eye turned toward Tenali.
Whispers rippled through the court.
The whole court laughed. The ministers looked at him mockingly.
Even the king found it a strange claim. But knowing Tenali's cleverness, he suspected there was more to it.
Setting Up the Experiment
Tenali explained his plan.
The king gave the order at once. Guards went into town and brought an ordinary mother and her five-year-old son to court. The mother stepped in, frightened and confused. The boy simply looked around, innocent and curious.
The mother looked on in surprise. Tenali quietly leaned toward the boy and whispered something. The boy's eyes lit up, and he nodded.
The Wish for an Elephant
The boy stepped forward and stood before the king.
Surprise swept through the court. The king smiled and nodded.
Guards led a great royal elephant into the hall. Everyone clapped in delight. Only the mother looked anxious — she had no idea how she would take an elephant home.
The Real Wish
The boy clapped happily at the sight of the elephant. Then he turned back to the king.
The entire court froze in shock. The color drained from the king's face.
The king fumbled for words. The ministers exchanged bewildered glances. The mother lowered her head, unsure what to do.
Tenali's Explanation
Tenali walked toward the king and began to explain, calmly.
The king looked at the mother in silence. In her eyes he saw both exhaustion and love.
The Court's Response
The whole court fell into thoughtful silence. The ministers who had laughed moments earlier now lowered their heads.
The king rose to his feet and looked at the mother with humility.
The king removed his own necklace and offered it to her as a gift.
Tears of joy filled the mother's eyes.
The Ending
The whole court broke into applause. The king turned to Tenali, smiling.
The court laughed once more — not in mockery this time, but with warmth. The mother and son left the court, happy and content.
The mother smiled softly and pulled her son close.
A king may sit on a throne, may command an army —
nothing compares to the work a mother does with love and patience, every single day.
Tenali's elephant trick made everyone laugh — but its real lesson was simple: the quietest work, done at home every day, is often the most unrecognized and the most heroic. True respect begins with noticing what we usually take for granted.
A king may rule a kingdom, but nothing compares to the tireless, loving work of a mother.
When the ministers praised the king's job as the hardest, Tenali had the boy make an impossible request to give the king a taste of what mothers face every day.
The boy first asked for an elephant, which the king granted at once. Then he asked for it to be packed into a sack — an impossible wish that left even the king baffled.
Yes, this story works wonderfully for children 8+ — full of humor, wit, and a heartfelt lesson about a mother's love.
Tenali Ramakrishna was a court poet of Emperor Krishnadevaraya of the Vijayanagara Empire, and one of his legendary Ashtadiggajas — famous for his wit and humor.
