🪔 About this Story
In this story, a King dreams of a magnificent palace floating in the air and, believing the dream to be real, orders his entire kingdom to build it — under threat of harsh punishment if they fail.
As fear grips the land, Tenali Ramakrishna arrives at court disguised as an old man and levels a strange accusation at the King himself — demanding real justice for a theft that happened only in a dream.
Through this clever confrontation, Tenali teaches the King — and every reader — where a dream must end and reality must begin.
Suddenly, an announcement rang out across Vijayanagara... a hundred thousand gold coins for whoever builds a palace that floats in the air! But if they fail... punishment is certain! Why did the King give such a strange order?
The royal court of Vijayanagara... that day, the Emperor stepped into the hall brimming with excitement. The Minister asked, surprised.
🎖️ Minister
"Your Majesty... you seem so joyful today."
👑 King
"Yes, Minister... last night I had a wondrous dream. Amid the clouds, I saw a magnificent palace floating in the air. Golden walls... diamond pillars... steps that never touched the ground... that vision still floats before my eyes. I want a palace exactly like that."
A sudden silence fell over the court. A renowned sculptor stepped forward humbly.
🛠️ Sculptor
"Your Majesty... we can build a towering palace. We can build one atop a mountain. We can even build one in the middle of water. But... building a palace that floats in the air is impossible."
The King rose gravely.
👑 King
"I dislike calling something 'impossible' before even trying. Who says what seems impossible today cannot become possible tomorrow? Go... build that palace exactly as I saw it in my dream. Whoever builds it shall receive a hundred thousand gold coins! If you fail... harsh punishment is certain."
With that royal decree, the entire kingdom was gripped by fear. Sculptors, architects, artists from near and far — all of them tried. But no one could build a palace that floats in the air.
No one spoke of the reward anymore — everyone spoke only of the punishment. Watching all this, Tenali Ramakrishna smiled quietly to himself.
🪶 Tenali (to himself)
"The King isn't wrong... but he has begun believing his dream is real. What he needs now is not a lecture... but an experience."
The next day, the royal court was in session. Just then, an old man — in torn clothes, with a walking stick in hand — entered the court, weeping.
🧓 Old Man
"Your Majesty... grant me justice."
👑 King
"What happened, grandfather?"
🧓 Old Man
"Your Majesty... all the wealth I saved my entire life has been stolen."
👑 King
"Grandfather... do you know who the thief is?"
🧓 Old Man
"I do, Your Majesty. That person... is right here in this court."
Whispers immediately spread through the hall.
👑 King
"Then why delay? Tell us who that person is."
The old man stood silent for a moment.
🧓 Old Man
"If I tell you... will you truly punish them, Your Majesty?"
The King rose proudly from his throne.
👑 King
"This is the King's word! In this kingdom, all are equal before justice. Whoever that person may be... punishment is certain."
The old man slowly raised his hand... pointing directly at the King...
🧓 Old Man
"Then... that thief... is you, Your Majesty, seated upon the throne!"
The entire court fell silent at once. The Minister rose in anger.
🎖️ Minister
"Do you know what you're saying? You call the Emperor himself a thief?"
The guards rushed forward. But the King stopped them with a raised hand.
👑 King
"Wait. Let us hear him first. When did I steal your wealth?"
🧓 Old Man
"Last night, Your Majesty."
The King was taken aback.
👑 King
"Last night? I never even left the palace."
The old man said calmly.
🧓 Old Man
"...in my dream."
The entire court burst into laughter. The King, laughing too, said.
👑 King
"Grandfather... you are quite something! You seek real justice for a theft that happened in a dream?"
🧓 Old Man
"Your Majesty... didn't you order a real palace to be built, from something you merely saw in a dream? If so... is it wrong of me to seek justice for a theft that happened in a dream too?"
The smile vanished from the King's face. He spoke angrily.
👑 King (angrily)
"Who are you, old man... to question me?"
But the old man did not flinch. He slowly removed his shawl, revealing a rudraksha garland and sacred thread beneath. Then he peeled away the false hair and beard. The entire court rose in astonishment.
👑 King (surprised, but composed)
"Tenali!!! It's you!!!"
Tenali folded his hands and spoke humbly.
🪶 Tenali
"Forgive me, Your Majesty... the decree you issued has left the people terrified. That is why I dared to take such a risk. One must not call something 'impossible' before trying — that much is true, Your Majesty. But forcing the people to attempt what defies nature and dharma itself is not right, Your Majesty!!"
The King thought silently for a few moments.
👑 King (with a slight smile)
"So in the end... you've outwitted your own King, Tenali?"
👑 King (gravely)
"From this moment... I revoke my decree to build a palace that floats in the air."
👑 King (continuing)
"Your wit has awakened us, Tenali... and so, the wealth I 'stole' in your dream, I now give to you truly, as a gift."
(The King hands Tenali a small sealed pouch — its contents unrevealed.) Tenali received the gift humbly with both hands.
The entire court erupted in applause.
