It wasn't an enemy who ruined him. It was his best friend of twenty years.

One day, a silk merchant came to Chanakya's ashram.

🧵 Somadatta (voice trembling)
"Gurudeva, my business, my honour — everything is gone."
📜 Chanakya (calmly)
"Who did this?"
🧵 Somadatta (softly)
"My dearest friend… Vasanta."

💛 Vasanta (proudly)
"In all Pataliputra, there's no silk to match my Somadatta's!"

Somadatta laughed happily and patted Vasanta's hand, his eyes full of trust.

🏺 Govinda (shaping a pot, without looking up)
"Don't tell everyone your accounts. Not everyone wishes you well."

Somadatta waved him off in annoyance and walked away.

On the night the flood drowned the godown, Govinda carried bundles all night long. Vasanta… never came.

💛 Vasanta (casually)
"Which village does your silk come from? How much do you pay for it?"

🧵 Somadatta (excitedly)
"The palace order has come! The weaver village, the price, the date… I'm telling you everything!"
💛 Vasanta (hugging him tight)
"Your victory is my victory, my friend!"

That very night, Vasanta secretly went to the weaver village.

On delivery day… the royal officer cut open a bolt of silk.

📜 Chanakya (voice-over)
"Everyone saw the cotton threads. No one saw the seal."
🏛️ Royal Officer (angrily)
"This is fraud! Your order is cancelled!"

The order went to Vasanta. Creditors emptied the shop. And his dearest friend… did not come even once.

Chanakya's One Question — Who Came in Hard Times?

Chanakya's Ashram
📜 Chanakya
"When your godown was drowned in the flood — who came?"

Somadatta slowly turned and looked at Govinda. His eyes filled with tears.

📜 Chanakya
"Vasanta didn't become a traitor for praising you. He became one by using your trust to harm you."
📜 Chanakya
"Govinda criticised you — yet stood by you in your trouble. Don't look at words… look at deeds."
"Avoid the friend who ruins your work behind your back and speaks sweetly to your face — he is a pot of poison with milk on top. (Chanakya Niti 2.5)"
परोक्षे कार्यहन्तारं प्रत्यक्षे प्रियवादिनम्। वर्जयेत्तादृशं मित्रं विषकुम्भं पयोमुखम्॥
📜 Chanakya
"Such a friend is like a pot with milk on top and poison inside. Keep him at a distance."

🏺 Govinda (suddenly remembering)
"Gurudeva! That night I saw Vasanta's cart in the weaver village!"

Chanakya blamed no one. He went to the weaver village with that bundle.

📜 Chanakya (calmly)
"Whose seal is this? Who gave you new work that night?"
🧶 Head Weaver (trembling)
"It was Vasanta, swami! He promised money… and didn't pay a single coin!"

Vasanta's fraud was exposed before the royal officer. The order came back to Somadatta.

🏺 Govinda (grumbling, hiding a smile)
"All right, all right… at least now, learn to hold your tongue."
