Story Summary

Has Goddess Lakshmi come right up to your doorstep… and turned back? You work hard all day and your salary comes every month, yet by mid-month nothing is left. The reason isn't a flaw in your puja — it's the habits in your home. 2,300 years ago, Chanakya said that to some homes Lakshmi comes without being called. Here are the 6 things that happen in those homes, with the original Chanakya Niti verses and real-life examples from today.

Is Lakshmi Turning Back?

Today

Has Goddess Lakshmi come right up to your doorstep… and turned back?

You work hard all day. Your salary comes every month… but by mid-month, nothing is left in your hands.

The reason isn't a flaw in your puja… it's the habits in your home, every day.

Two thousand three hundred years ago, an ordinary Brahmin held up an empire with his intellect. He was… Chanakya. The great mind who broke the pride of the Nanda kings and made Chandragupta king.

No one knew better than him how a kingdom's treasury fills up, and how it empties. And he said it clearly, in one verse — to some homes, Lakshmi comes without being called.

What happens in those homes… let's see in these six sutras. The last one is the most important of all.

02

Sutra 1 — Keep the Kitchen Full

Chanakya Niti 3.21
Sutra 1 — Keep the Kitchen Full — Chanakya Niti illustration

The grain in your home must always be full. Chanakya says —

mūrkhā yatra na pūjyante dhānyaṃ yatra susañcitam, dāmpatye kalaho nāsti tatra śrīḥ svayamāgatā — Where fools are not honoured, where grain is well stored, and where husband and wife do not quarrel, there Lakshmi comes of her own accord.

Meaning… Lakshmi comes on her own to the home where grain is stored well. In those days, grain was the real wealth. Even in a famine, a stocked home bows to no one.

Same street. Same salary. Two homes. In the first home, on payday itself — restaurants, online orders, shopping… By month-end, the rice tin is empty. A tab at the grocery shop.

The second home is Ramesh's. On payday he first buys — rice, dal, oil. Only then the other expenses. In six months, Ramesh's debt was halved. The first home's debt… doubled.

✅ Do This Today
"On your next payday, fill the kitchen first. Everything else after."

Sutra 2 — Keep Emergency Money Apart

Chanakya Niti 1.6
Sutra 2 — Keep Emergency Money Apart — Chanakya Niti illustration

But even with grain at home… one emergency can shake the whole house. That's why, sutra two — keep emergency money separate.

āpadarthe dhanaṃ rakṣed dārān rakṣed dhanairapi, ātmānaṃ satataṃ rakṣed dārairapi dhanairapi — Save money for times of trouble; protect your family even with that wealth; and always protect yourself.

Save money for hard times — those are Chanakya's words. Trouble never comes with a warning. A hospital bill, a lost job, a failed crop…

If there's no money in hand that day, you must knock on someone's door for a loan. Interest on the loan. Then interest on the interest. A single emergency… becomes a burden carried for years.

Each month, Ravi put four thousand into a separate account. Its name — emergency money. Two years later, his father was in hospital. The bill — ninety thousand. Ravi begged no one. He paid not one rupee of interest.

His friend, on the same salary, had a small accident that same year. Loans, interest… still not cleared. Four thousand a month. Nearly a lakh in two years. That one lakh saved a family one day.

✅ Do This Today
"Start a separate box, or a separate account. Even five hundred is enough to begin. But never touch it, except for an emergency."

Sutra 3 — Lakshmi Stays Where It Is Clean

Chanakya Niti 15.4
Sutra 3 — Lakshmi Stays Where It Is Clean — Chanakya Niti illustration

kucailinaṃ dantamalopadhāriṇaṃ bahvāśinaṃ niṣṭhurabhāṣiṇaṃ ca, sūryodaye cāstamite śayānaṃ vimuñcati śrīryadi cakrapāṇiḥ — Lakshmi leaves one who wears dirty clothes, has unclean teeth, overeats, speaks harshly, and sleeps at sunrise and sunset — even if he is Vishnu himself.

Those who wear dirty clothes, those who don't clean their teeth — Lakshmi leaves them, so said Chanakya.

That's why, in the old days, before dawn, every doorstep was washed and decorated with rangoli. Ever wondered why? Cleanliness isn't for beauty — it's for trust.

Same street. Two tiffin carts. Same taste. But the queue is only at one cart. Why? At that cart, shining vessels and clean clothes. At this one, greasy pots and a dirty rag.

The difference isn't in taste — it's in cleanliness. It's the same at home. A cluttered house clutters the mind too.

✅ Do This Today
"The doorstep, the kitchen, the prayer shelf… keep these three clean before you sleep."

Sutra 4 — Rise Before the Sun

Chanakya Niti 15.4
Sutra 4 — Rise Before the Sun — Chanakya Niti illustration

This is a mistake many people make every day, without knowing — sleeping at sunrise and at sunset.

In the same verse Chanakya goes on — those who overeat, those who sleep at sunrise and sunset… even if he is Lord Vishnu himself, Lakshmi leaves him.

Think about it… if she leaves Vishnu, will she not leave us? Sunrise — the time the day begins, the time work begins. Evening — the time we light the lamp at home. Sleep at that hour, and all of that day's chances pass us by.

Two shops. Same goods. One makes a profit, the other a loss. The difference — three hours. Srinu's shop opens at nine. The shop next door, at six. Everyone who comes for milk and bread… goes next door.

Srinu worked hard. But he got the timing wrong. One change — he lifted his shutter at six. In three months, all his customers came back.

And meals — not a full stomach, three-quarters is enough. Laziness… begins with overeating.

✅ Do This Today
"Tomorrow, wake up before the sun. At lamp-lighting time, make sure no one at home is asleep."
06

Sutra 5 — Peace at Home

Chanakya Niti 3.21
Sutra 5 — Peace at Home — Chanakya Niti illustration

Miss this sutra, and following the other four is no use — Lakshmi does not stay in a home full of quarrels.

Daampatye kalaho naasti — meaning… to a home where husband and wife don't fight, Lakshmi comes on her own. Chanakya also warned — Lakshmi leaves those who speak harshly.

Why? In a home with quarrels, decisions are made in anger. Not with thought.

Kiran and Latha. Both earn good salaries. Yet at every month-end, zero in the account. The reason isn't money — it's fighting. In anger, each spent behind the other's back.

One day, one rule — on the first of every month, over tea, ten minutes of calm accounts. No more secrets. No more suspicion. Within a year, they bought gold for the first time.

The salary didn't grow… the peace at home did. That is the real Lakshmi.

✅ Do This Today
"Never talk about money in anger. Once a month, both together, calmly."
07

Sutra 6 — Honest Earning

Chanakya Niti 15.6
Sutra 6 — Honest Earning — Chanakya Niti illustration

And now the last sutra… the strongest of them all. Money earned unjustly doesn't last long.

anyāyopārjitaṃ vittaṃ daśavarṣāṇi tiṣṭhati, prāpte caikādaśe varṣe samūlaṃ ca vinaśyati — Wealth gained unjustly stays for ten years; when the eleventh year comes, it perishes, roots and all.

Money earned unjustly stays for ten years. In the eleventh year… it goes, roots and all. Money that comes through cheating, as it enters the home… brings fear along with it.

One market. Two traders. One — adulterated goods, false weights. In ten years, a big mansion. The other — honest weights. A small shop.

In the eleventh year… one fraud came out. Property, name, peace of mind — all gone. Just as Chanakya said — roots and all.

Today, the whole town goes to that small shop. Honesty gives slowly… but what it gives, it never takes back.

✅ Do This Today
"Make sure every rupee coming into your home has not come through anyone's tears."

In Short — The Six Sutras

Remember

Let's recall them once. A full kitchen. Emergency money apart. A clean home. Up before the sun. Peace at home. Honest earning.

A home with these six… never needs to call Lakshmi. She comes on her own.

Of these six, which one will you start from today? Share this with everyone at home. Because Lakshmi stays not for one person… but for the whole family.

Moral of the Story 🪔

Lakshmi isn't only in the puja room… she lives in our everyday habits.

💡 Life Lesson

Kitchen first on payday, a little emergency money every month, a clean home, rising early, peace at home and honest earning — a home that follows all six never needs to call Lakshmi. She stays not because of one person, but because of the whole family.
