Story Summary

Three dolls that look exactly alike — the same weight, the same shape, even the same faces! Sent to King Krishnadevaraya by a dear friend, only one of them is a true treasure. When every scholar in the court gave up, Tenali Ramakrishna solved the riddle with nothing but a thin copper wire — and revealed the three kinds of people the dolls stood for. A short, wise tale about what we should do with the things we hear.

One day, a close friend of King Krishnadevaraya sent him three dolls. With them came a short message.

A servant carried in three identical-looking dolls and set them down before the King.

👑 King
"Whoever can find the difference between these three dolls… will show us who is truly wise in our court. Let every scholar try!"

The scholars turned the dolls over and over, studying their ears, eyes and hands.

One by one the scholars examined the dolls. They found no difference anywhere. The same weight… the same shape… even the same faces! In the end, they all gave up.

"Your Majesty… they are all exactly the same!"

"Tenali… do these three look the same to you too?"
🪶 Tenali Rama
"On the outside they look the same, Your Majesty… but inside there is a very big difference. Let me try, Your Majesty."

The Secret Copper-Wire Test — The First Doll — Scene from the Tenali Rama story

Tenali took a thin copper wire and slowly slid it into a hole near the first doll's ear. The wire went in — and came out at its mouth.

🪶 Tenali Rama
"The first doll… is like a person who cannot keep what he hears to himself, Your Majesty. Whatever falls into his ear comes straight out of his mouth."
05

The Second Doll — In One Ear, Out the Other

The Royal Court

Tenali tested the second doll. The wire went in through one ear and came out of the other.

🪶 Tenali Rama
"This one is like a person who lets what he hears pass from one ear out through the other. He listens… but keeps nothing in his mind."
06

Where Did the Wire Stop in the Third Doll?

The Royal Court

Tenali tested the third doll. The wire went in through the ear — and stopped inside its chest.

👑 King (surprised)
"But this one didn't come out anywhere?"

Which Doll Is the Greatest? — Tenali Explains

The Royal Court
Which Doll Is the Greatest? — Tenali Explains — Scene from the Tenali Rama story
🪶 Tenali Rama
"Your Majesty… the first doll spills out whatever it hears. The second forgets what it hears. But the third keeps what it hears within itself. That is why it is the greatest of the three."
👑 King (delighted)
"Well done, Tenali! You have understood not just the secret of the three dolls… but the nature of the people behind them."

The whole court applauded Tenali's wisdom.

Moral of the Story 🪆

Repeating everything you hear is not wisdom… nor is forgetting it. True wisdom is keeping the good you hear in your heart and acting on it when it is needed.

💡 Life Lesson

A true friend is one who guards what is told to him in trust. Good advice changes us only when we hold it in our hearts — not when it goes in one ear and out the other.
