Story Summary

"You? You'll compete with me?" laughed an arrogant wrestler at Ramakrishna. Undefeated across many kingdoms, he challenged the court of Vijayanagara — and not a single wrestler stepped forward. Then Tenali Ramakrishna beat him without wrestling at all, armed only with a small silver bowl of water. A story about how weak strength becomes when it is joined by pride.

All the wrestlers in the court looked at one another. No one came forward.

The Royal Court

The wrestler held the bowl tightly and stood still. Before long his arm began to ache, and then to tremble.

Ramakrishna simply stood beside him, watching calmly, a quiet smile on his face.

At last the wrestler shouted impatiently—

💪 Wrestler
"How much longer must I stand like this?"
🪶 Tenali Rama
"But you said you could hold it for a whole day, didn't you?"

In anger, the wrestler put the bowl down.

"Your Majesty… the contest is over."
💪 Wrestler (surprised)
"I lost… over something so small?"

The Lesson the Wrestler Learned

The Royal Court
The Lesson the Wrestler Learned — Scene from the Tenali Rama story

The wrestler's head drooped. He stood silent for a while, then said to Ramakrishna—

💪 Wrestler
"You are right, Kavi-garu… I built up the strength of my body. But I forgot wisdom and patience."

Ramakrishna smiled. King Krishnadevaraya, too, happily congratulated him.

What lost that day was not the wrestler's strength… but his strength joined with pride. And what defeated it was Ramakrishna's wisdom and patience.

Moral of the Story 💪

Strength joined with pride is weakness. To defeat it you need no power — only wisdom and patience.

💡 Life Lesson

Physical strength alone is not enough; the mind needs patience and wisdom too. The moment we think 'I am the greatest' is the moment we begin to lose.
